An opera gala that matches every superlative: Some of the world’s best opera singers from the classical music scene are presenting a variety of the most popular Bel Canto Arias. They will be accompanied by members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Harmonia Symphony Orchestra, a youth orchestra from Peru, under the baton of Ukrainian conductor Andrii Yurkevych. The opera gala took place in 2015 in the Vienna State Opera, and was also a fundraising event with the motto: Juan Diego Flórez and Friends in Concert for Sinfonía por el Perú. The non-profit organization Sinfonía por el Perú was founded in 2011, and has the goal of making a positive difference to the lives of thousands of underprivileged children and young people all over Peru through music education. Juan Diego Flórez directs the Sinfonía por el Perú, and comes himself from the Latin American country. To help support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, the Peruvian tenor has also established the Friends of Juan Diego Flórez Foundation. The finale of the opera gala, which Flórez introduces with a touching acceptance speech, could hardly be more thrilling. All the Bel Canto stars join in the famous Neapolitan hit Non ti scordar di me, by Ernesto De Curtis. An unforgettably beautiful opera gala. A gala concert at the International Classical Music Awards: the ICMA will take place on April 21, 2022, and will feature a special concert at the Philharmonie Luxembourg. The award-winners themselves will be performing the concert program. Conductors Adam Fischer (lifetime achievement award) and Jakub Hrůša (symphony music award), violinists Julian Kainrath and Gennaro Cardaropoli (both young artist of the year award winners), pianist Michael Korstick (award for special achievements) and tenor Edgardo Rocha (choir music award) as well as the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, which itself received the award for contemporary music, will all be participating. The International Classical Music Awards are taking place for the 12th time this year, with prizes in 26 categories. The jury is made up of representatives from 15 European countries. In addition to musicians, awards are also given to albums, labels and music documentaries. Deutsche Welle will also be celebrating its win for the music documentary “A World Without Beethoven?” in the Video Documentaries category. The jury stated: “A world without Beethoven? It’s simply unimaginable. In Martin Roddewig’s film, the famous horn player Sarah Willis of the Berliner Philharmoniker travels through the realms of rock and classical music, jazz and film scores. In interviews with musicians and managers, the documentary shows how profoundly Beethoven’s innovations have shaped the music of centuries to come. This film is witty and highly entertaining.” “A World Without Beethoven?” is yet another music documentary that is not to be missed: 🤍 Program: (00:00) Intro (02:37) Speech by Remy Franck, President of the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) (06:49) Ludwig van Beethoven, Leonore Overture No. 3 Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg Ádám Fischer | CONDUCTOR (23:39) Camille Saint-Saëns, Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso in A minor, Op. 28 Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg Ádám Fischer | CONDUCTOR Julian Kainrath | VIOLIN (34:40) Gioacchino Rossini, “Domine Deus” (Petite Messe solennelle) Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg Giulio Prandi | CONDUCTOR Edgardo Rocha | TENOR (41:33) Sebastian Androne-Nakanishi, Lan Huahua − The Dark Blue Flower (creation of the orchestral version) Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg Ivan Boumans | CONDUCTOR (56:36) Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, III. Montserrat Caballé and Marilyn Horne – two of the 20th century’s greatest singers. In the 1990 opera gala Evviva Belcanto! the vocally powerful prima donnas perform together in the philharmonic hall of Munich’s Gasteig cultural center. They’re accompanied by the Munich Radio Orchestra, conducted by Nicola Rescigno. Montserrat Caballé (soprano) and Marilyn Horne (mezzo-soprano) display their full range of talents across an exceptional selection of arias from popular opera. Whether performing solos or duets, the consistency of the timbre, virtuosity, and poignant expressiveness of each singer – even through the most difficult of passages – renders this historic concert a unique experience. (00:00) ANTONIO VIVALDI (1678 - 1741) Sposa son disprezzata From Il Bajazet (Il Tamerlano) (1735), Act II Montserrat Caballé, soprano (07:35) GIACOMO MEYERBEER (1791 - 1864) Non, non, vous n’avez jamais, je gage From Les Huguenots (1836), Act II Marilyn Horne, mezzo-soprano (12:46) GIOACHINO ROSSINI (1792 - 1868) O patria!… Di tanti palpiti From Tancredi (1813), Act I Marilyn Horne, mezzo-soprano (21:19) SAVERIO MERCADANTE (1795 - 1870) Dove sono? From Le due illustri rivali (1838) Montserrat Caballé, soprano (30:02) GIOACHINO ROSSINI (1792 - 1868) Ebbene a te… Giorno d’orrore From Semiramide (1823), Act II Montserrat Caballé, soprano Marilyn Horne, mezzo-soprano Montserrat Caballé (1933 - 2018) was a Spanish opera singer who performed in all of the world's great opera houses. Her international career began in 1965, in New York. In a Carnegie Hall concert, Caballé replace – of all people – Marilyn Horne in a performance of Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia, and won the audience over. That same year, Caballé received her big break as Margarethe in Gounod's Faust, at the Metropolitan Opera. American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne (*1934) first performed as a soprano. It was not until the 1960s that she found her true vocal home – as a mezzo-soprano. With her coloratura roles that vocal range, Horne set the bar for many great operas. Her repertoire encompasses music of the 20th century. #MontserratCaballé #MarilynHorne #OperaGala

Charity and classical music: In this episode of Sarah's Music, Sarah Willis reports on the fourth Opera Gala for the German AIDS Foundation in Bonn 2015. Eleven internationally renowned singers performed for free for the German AIDS Foundation. They are accompanied by the choir of the Theater Bonn and the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn conducted by Stefan Blunier. Why is classical music so well suited to charity events? Willis interviews Ulrich Heide from the German AIDS Foundation and Helmut Andreas Hartwig, one of the initiators of the opera gala. And for friends of bel canto singing, there are also some great concert excerpts to watch. Sarah Willis is a British-American French horn player. In 2001, she joined the Berlin Philharmonic, becoming the first female member of its brass section. Willis was born in Maryland, USA and grew up in Tokyo, Boston, Moscow and London. At age 14 she started playing French horn and then attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department in London, UK. She studied full-time at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK. In 1991, Sarah Willis moved to Berlin, where she became Second Horn with the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim.
