OpenWRT 21.02 - Guest Network & Extended with Dumb AP/Router


In this video, we are going to setup Guest LAN network on OpenWRT router. And then, we are going to extend this guest Network with a Dumb AP/Router. As a result, you will have a second network for your guest or IoT devices that works independently and won't be able to connect to the main LAN/OpenWRT management interface. For this setup, I used the Linksys WRT1900AC as the main router with LAN port 1 was configured as Guest LAN port. In this video, we will setup guest LAN on OpenWRT LuCI. I will show you how to create the VLAN on the Switch page, create the guest network interface and configure the firewall zone. Devices in Guest LAN will have access to the internet, but it will not be able to access LuCI or other devices in your main LAN network (LAN isolation). OpenWRT - WAN & LAN on Single Network Interface device with VLAN


In this tutorial, we are going to setup OpenWRT with a single ethernet port device. Since there is only one physical network interface, we will setup 2 VLANs for WAN and LAN with a switch that supports VLAN - TP Link TL-SG108E. (Please read the below description) / If you have any problem with WAN connection, please try to change Port 1 (to the ISP router) on the switch from tagged to untagged \ This tutorial should work with any single NIC, such as x86 PC, Raspberry Pi, Nano Pi and Orange Pi, etc. Summary about the setup: We will use VLAN 1 for our LAN devices to minimize the configuration. VLAN 10 will be setup for WAN interface with DHCP protocol. On the switch, port 1 is connected to the ISP router with port 1 tagged VLAN 10. Switch port 2 will be connected to the OpenWRT router, it is tagged with VLAN 10 as well. Port 3 to 8 will be used for LAN devices. Port 2 to 8 is untagged with VLAN 1. Install OpenWRT 21.02 & DSA VLAN Configuration for WAN Interface


The first stable release of the OpenWRT 21.02 stable series is now available. It comes with a lot of new changes, for example WPA3, TLS, HTTPS and initial DSA support for some of the targers, including ath79, mvebu and ramips (mt7621). At the same time, the Switch page had been removed and we need to configure VLAN on Network - Interfaces - Devices Tab. In this video, we will install OpenWRT 21.02 on the Linksys WRT1900AC. After that, we will configure the WAN interface in DHCP client mode on VLAN 30. You can follow this tutorial to configure PPPoE with VLAN on OpenWRT 21.02, all you need to do is change the Protocol of the WAN interface to PPPoE, instead of DHCP. OpenWRT - 802.11s Mesh WiFi Network


In this video, we are going to setup an 802.11s Mesh WiFi network with OpenWRT using Luci. 802.11s is an open-source standard for connecting devices wirelessly, it is working on Layer 2 of the OSI model. All the nodes in the Mesh network can see each other as if they are all connected to the switch. Please enable 802.11r Fast Transition during the AP setup OpenWRT handles this very well with wpad-mesh-opensslWe will create a Mesh connection between the Habanero DVK and the D-Link DIR-842, and configure Wireless Access Point (WiFi) so that devices connected to the AP can roaming when moving from one place to another. If you don't need to connect the 2 routers wirelessly, you can check out the 802.11r Fast Roaming, where we connect these routers with an ethernet cable. With OpenWRT installed, we can setup a Mesh network using devices from different vendors, for example: Mikrotik, D-Link, TP-Link, 8devices, etc. as long as the WLAN hardware supports Mesh. DD-WRT Tutorial - How to create a separate public guest network that works!


This video shows how to create a secured private wireless network and a separate public guest network (with internet connectivity) on a Linksys WRT54GL router using DD-WRT firmware. This video is a bit old. New problems are occurring because of differnent versions of DD-WRT. I am using DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) std, (SVN revision 13064). This tutorial is for use with this version. Also, as people have stated in comments, in QOS the bandwidth must be set to 90-95% of your internet connection speed. This is not shown in the video! Please keep in mind that although you can use DD-WRT on many routers, not all of them will broadcast the SSID of the guest network. The WRT54GL will. Please also keep in mind that throughout this video, EVERYWHERE I enter you will need to use This is extremely important.

OpenWRT - Bandwidth Limiting for LAN & WiFi - SQM QoS


In this video, we are going to control the bandwidth of LAN and WiFi by configure rules in OpenWRT SQM QoS. It is also know as "bandwidth limit per interface". We will create 2 different LAN interfaces, each of them will have different download & upload speed. Also, we will apply a rule to Wireless interface, which normally is wlan0 and wlan1(if you have 2 wireless radios). If you haven't watch the previous video about SQM QoS, please take a look on it. Else, you can just install "luci-app-sqm" and proceed with this video. One of the big difference while setting up the speed limit for LAN interfaces is that the Upload speed shown in SQM QoS GUI is actually the Download speed and vice versa. Add OpenWRT into Home Network As One Armed Bypassing Router


To make better control of my home network, in this video, I shows how to add OpenWRT into home network topology without making changes to existing configuration. You router configuration and topology will mostly be same as before, other than adding one virtual machine and dhcp configuration changes on the wireless router. OpenWRT image will be running in a virtual machine and acting as one-armed router (Router on the stick). In this way, your home wireless router continues providing wireless connection function and acting as gateway connecting to Internet, but all other traffic goes to OpenWRT first before it go out to internet from your Home Wireless Router. Main reason to use OpenWRT is because OpenWRT has thousands of software packages available to enhance the router's function, such as Adblock, DDNS. How to set up OpenWRT as an AccessPoint repeating your WiFi SSID


Do you have weak spots in your home WiFi? So did I and I decided to fix it on a budget. Here is the how to set up OpenWRT as an AccessPoint repeating your WiFi SSID (repeater mode) using the LuCi web interface. For the demo we use a TP-Link TL-WR1043N/ND v2 which has OpenWRT (Chaos Calmer 15.05 with LuCi 15.05) which is factory reset. I use a mac for the demo, because it was the device giving the most WiFi issues in the house.The default language of the mac is Dutch but the buttons you need to click will be in the same place ;) On my Android phone I use the app Wifi Analyzer to pick the best WiFi frequencies for the router and the various access points.

OpenWRT - File Sharing Server on OpenWRT with Samba4 (SMB)


In this video, we will configure File Sharing server on OpenWRT with Samba4 (SMB). For this tutorial, I used a USB 3.0 SSD (USB Attached SCSI device) and connected the hard disk to the USB 3.0 port on the Linksys WRT1900AC to achieve the highest file transferring speed. You can connect the hard disk to a USB 2.0 port but the speed is slower. Besides USB hard disk, a normal USB drive or USB printer will be supported by Samba. In this video, we are talking about Traffic Shaping on OpenWRT, especially SQM and QoS. According to OpenWRT wiki, the OpenWrt SQM-QoS algorithms using cake or fq_codel have nearly eliminated bufferbloat. SQM frequently performs better in all cases - upload and download - than arduous manual QoS settings described below. In this video, we will setup SQM QoS on OpenWRT and configure it according to your internet speed (throughput) and hardware setup.
