Spring 2016 - check out my updated course, Foundations of Digital Audio, at 🤍 HD version of this video and petition to end the Loudness War here: 🤍 Big-name CD manufacturers are distorting sounds to make them seem louder. Sound quality suffers. NOTE: Use headphones if listening on a mobile device. Phones and tablets usually apply their own dynamic range compression on their built-in speakers, which hides the effect of this example. This video was made with image editing software and a screen capture program for the visuals, and a DAW (Digital Performer 4.5) to process the audio. Thanks to everyone for watching! - Matt Mayfield, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
What is the loudness war in music? In this video, I will explain what the loudness war is all about. The loudness war is something that happened with the introduction of the CD. Music producers realized they could make their music louder than the competition. Louder always sounds better to humans, and by making the music louder, it was believed that people would appreciate the music over the competition. Unfortunately, this pursuit of louder and louder music resulted in the music losing quality, and ending up sounding distorted. You can only make music louder until a certain point before it starts to degrade, and that's what the loudness war is basically all about. The loudness war, in the end, became a very bad thing for music in general. If you are a producer you have probably heard about the loudness war. But what is it exactly? And will it ever end? This video will highlight all the important stuff you need to know about the loudness war. Some people say the loudness war is finally over, but that's not entirely true. It's true that today we are much better off than we were at the start of the loudness war. However, the war is still not officially over, and a lot of music is still suffering from it. Make sure to check out my next video about the loudness war where I will be talking about the end of the loudness war, and what you need to know in order to make sure your tracks sound good after it's finally over. Is the loudness war over? What does that even mean? Loudness, dynamics, over-compression, and other buzzwords have dominated the industry for many years. But what does any of it really mean and how does it affect us as Mastering Engineers? Has music gotten louder and less dynamic? Or have our techniques just adapted as music production styles have changed? ABOUT US: We are a high level MENTORING and training program for engineers and producers. I did it. I won. Good luck getting any louder than this. You can all stop this sillyness now. Loudness doesn't matter, just make it sound good. Lots of you requested I release this mix as it apparently "slaps". That means it's good, right? Please click here 🤍 for HQ stereo. Radiohead made the stems for the different instruments available with little compression applied I made my own Mix and master so that I can have a more up to date example. So you think In Rainbows sounded good? Well its does compared to many modern albums, as there is no clipping but it has very carefully it has been very heavily compressed which means that while you might not notice immediately anything wrong with it, its only because you don't know it any better, why is this a problem, well for one it shows it could have sounded alot better than it does, and secondly constantly loud grabs your attention but in the long run discourages repeat listening without most people even realising why. Some people have stated this is how the band wanted it, oh so it's just artistic intent that In Rainbows is just as loud as everybody else, FWIW This is how it might have sounded had the song been released about the time as Pablo Honey. It's a shame I couldn't do this to Jigsaw, that would have been awesome!
This was requested. The 1991 CD release against 2011 Deluxe Edition 2 x CD release (which is of course remastered). My ears are not optimized for this kind of music, so you be the judge ;) Flatness, which causes lack of punch/impact, is obvious in the 2011 remaster just by looking at the waveform. The 24-bit 96 kHz release from HDTracks.com: 🤍 ...has similar characteristics as the 2011 remaster you see in this video. What a waste of bits :P
This is a debate that's been going on for some time now. Most people in the know realize that it destroys the transients in music. Many professional mix engineers as well as Master Engineers, have been hoping for an end for while now. But, is the rest of the world ready for that? Let's talk about it!

In this video, I compare the commercial release of Ben Folds' "Bitch Went Nuts" (from his 2008 album, Way to Normal) with a remix/remaster that I put together using the track's stemsdemonstrating the effect that brickwall mastering can have on the fullness and punchiness of a track. Mine is a preliminary master I'll probably be tweaking my version a bit in the future. At some point, I plan on having all remastered tracks from Way to Normal available on my YouTube channel. Why am I remixing and remastering this album for more dynamic range and better sound quality (especially since that's what Ben Folds' Stems and Seeds release aimed to do)? Because I'm a nerd, and Stems and Seeds wasn't good enough. "Bitch Went Nuts" still requires some tweaking, but I still wanted to include it in this demonstration. What can I say I like the song. :-) Feel free to leave comments below.
Video start with the remastered and then change at each black line. Comparison between the original release of American Idiot and the Remastered version with greater dynamic. The original has a dynamic range of DR5, the remaster a dynamic range of DR9. The louder original release has been reduced to the level of the remastered version.

Lightning Strikes is the sixth studio album by the Japanese heavy metal band Loudness.
The practice of applying excess compression to boost the overall perceived volume artificially progressed exponentially throughout the 90s. By the time we reached the decade's end, there were several notable examples where even non-audiophile listeners began to notice quality issues. Perhaps most famously, Red Hot Chili Peppers "Californication" and Metallica's "Death Magnetic Magnetic" were among some of the worst offenders. Both of these records suffer from extreme compression that sucks the dynamics from the music and the levels into clearly audible digital clipping. In this video, we compare several vinyl copies and talk about the effect of mastering on each. Included in the mix is the 2012 180g cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Does it sound better? Watch and see. Full article on the importance of mastering and californication:

Rammstein - Rammlied CD vs. LP from album "Liebe Ist Für Alle Da" (2009) Please switch to 720p for best quality. Good speakers/headphones recommended. Comparison between CD and LP versions of the album. Difference is not as clear as in "Mutter", but still very noticeable. CD version had to be equalized to the same level with LP for reasonable comparison (CD volume in this video is -11,9 dB compared to original!). And finally: this is not a statement about LP (vinyl) being better than CD. Only the CD mastering is done horribly wrong. 🤍 🤍
