In this video we look at focus modes and drive modes and how they can be used to maximize the fast action shooting capabilities of your camera. Focus modes control how your cameras auto/manual focus works. Single AF (also called One Shot) means that your camera focuses once each time you half-press the shutter button. It's great for shooting stationary subjects that aren't moving towards or away from the camera. Continuous AF (also called AI Servo) is used to shoot a subject that is moving towards or away from you and you want the camera to continually refocus as long as you are holding down the front or back focus button. Learn more about back button focus here: 🤍 Lastly, we have manual focus. This is just as it sounds, it leaves the entire focus process up to the photographer as you need to manually turn the ring on the lens in order to focus. Each focus mode is useful for a different situation so it's good to start using single, continuous, and manual focus in your photography. Next we talk about Drive Modes. These modes control how the camera shutter acts when you full-press the shutter button. In single drive mode your camera will take one photo each time the shutter is pressed (regardless of how long the button is held down for). In continuous drive mode, the camera will continuously shoot images as long as the shutter button is held down. Both single and continuous drive modes are great for different situations. Depth of Field Cheatsheet (Shot List) ►► 🤍 Types of Camera Focus in Film ►► 🤍 Eye Trace and the Rule of Six ►► 🤍 More on Rack Focus ►► 🤍 Chapters: 00:00 Intro — Depth of Field Explained 01:35 Deep Focus 03:32 Shallow Focus 05:42 Soft Focus 07:42 Rack Focus 09:53 Split Diopter Lens 12:10 Tilt Shift Lens 13:36 Final Takeaways 14:12 In the Next Ep: Camera Gear Depth of field might be one of the last considerations filmmakers make when creating a shot list. But that doesn’t mean it should be ignored. In this video essay, we’re going to look at camera basics like depth of field and how camera focus is used in visual storytelling. With deep depth of field, shallow depth of field, soft focus, rack focus, split diopter lens, and tilt shift lens, each brings a different perspective to your shots. This is Episode 4 of The Shot List: Depth of Field Explained. Deep depth of field allows for action in the foreground, middle ground, and background; perfect for blocking and staging chaotic scenes like the opening shot of Gravity. Shallow depth of field helps to isolate subjects and guides the viewer’s eye with purpose and meaning — it’s also a great way to get that bokeh effect. Moonlight is full of shallow depth of field cinematography, bringing an extreme level of intimacy to the Chiron’s emotional journey. Soft focus can be used in dream sequences or flashbacks to give the cinematography a nostalgic glow, like Spielberg did throughout A.I. Artificial Intelligence. A rack focus is a great way to use shallow depth of field to make connections between subjects without needing to cut. Often using a follow focus controller, the focus puller can achieve even the most complicated shots, like in Bong Joon-ho’s The Host. The split diopter lens is ideal when you want to isolate foreground and background subjects simultaneously. Auteurs like Brian De Palma and Quentin Tarantino use split diopter shots all the time, including some stellar examples in The Hateful Eight. And, finally, we have the tilt shift lens. Tilt shift shots are rarely used in filmmaking because they can produce pretty radical images. In the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man, cinematographer Roger Deakins was able to shoot the bar mitzvah scene by visualizing Danny’s marijuana-influenced perspective. Directing and cinematography are all about using images to tell a story. With camera focus and depth of field in your bag of tricks, there’s no limit to how much “depth” you can bring to your shot list. #FilmTheory #VideoEssay #Filmmaking — Music by Artlist ► 🤍 Music by MusicBed ► 🤍 — SUBSCRIBE to StudioBinder’s YouTube channel! ►► 🤍 Looking for a project management platform for your filmmaking? Manual camera focus gives you greater control over your camera, but it's isn't always so easy to get it right. Learn 5 tips for better camera focusing. I shoot many event movies or other promotional films on a DSLR camera. Having a shallow depth of field is a great advantage, but at the same time also a disadvantage as it's harder to focus. But this shouldn't keep us away from shooting those cinematic shots on a wide open aperture. There're many tools that can help you with manual camera focusing. But lets be honest here, nobody likes extra costs which only results in a more bulkier camera. One great advantage of working with a small camera like a DSLR is its small and lightweight form factor. With some tricks, used by many professionals, we can get great camera focusing. 1. Know your lens The first tip is probably the most important one of all; know your lens. The more familiar you are with your lens, the better you know how the focus ring reacts. Professional focus pullers are able to focus real time Steadicam operators by just looking at the scene and calculating the distance between the camera and the subject. For single camera operators, this ability is also a great advantage to focus fast and more correct. In the video you will learn a nice way to practice this. 2. Focus Pulling The depth of field is always a specific area. When closing the aperture, this field gets bigger, which makes it easier for us to keep things in focus. But this also applies to the distance of the focus. Close objects have a smaller depth of field, while objects further away have a much greater depth of field. This also means that focus pulling will usually be easier when starting from an object closer to the lens and then pulling to something further away. 3. Following the Subject In the third tip we'll have a look how to keep someone in focus while following with the camera. The distance between the cameraman and the subject plays a big role here. You need to constantly measure this distance and adjust when the distance changes. This can either be done by adjusting the focus or by moving slower or faster. This tip also show you a away to practice this technique. 4. Focus Marks When having more time to put things up you can create focus marks. Normally you would use a follow focus for that, but it's perfectly possible without one. Just paste some tape marks on your lens for two or more focus points in your scene. Now you can focus very fast and accurate to specific points. 5. Focus Gear I promised not to included any third party gear, but this one is so simple you can make it yourself or buy one for just $3. I'm talking about a focus gear here. This is used for a follow focus, but I find them very useful for handling the focus with your hands as well. It gives you much greater grip, especially on lenses with a small focus ring. ✅ FROM THE VIDEO Article ► 🤍 Focus Gear ► 🤍 👕 MERCH ► 🤍 🎬 Get 1 Month of FREE Skillshare Premium ► 🤍 💙 LETS CONNECT Website ► 🤍 Discord ► 🤍 Twitter ►🤍 Instagram ► 🤍 💥 Download Unlimited Video Assets ► 🤍 Create your Website with Squarespace and start with 10% DISCOUNT ► 🤍 #cinecom

Life is like a camera. Focus on important things. Capture the good times. Learn from the negatives. Take another shot. Aperture, contrast, perspective, and shutter speed are all relevant in our lives. We need to find a balance amongst all of these to capture the perfect shots and moments. If life isn't quite where we want it to be, we can try again and capture better moments. Balance is key as we should't learn so heavily on one thing. Focus on what's in front of you and concentrate for that perfect moment. Make the best moments in life that you can possible create. Motivational and inspirational video about life. #paradox

We then adjust the f-Stop to adjust the intensity of the blurriness of the image. Finally we key the location of the empty to show you the affect in action. This will allow you to adjust the camera focus visually within seconds, it is an essential camera rig to use in Blender for a camera real effect.
