Note: This series is partially outdated. View the updated 2021 series here: 🤍 (View both series if you find them helpful, but if you get stuck see updated techniques in the 2021 series.) Want to build your first Android app? In this tutorial series let's get started with Android Studio and app development. We'll build an inventory management app that allows us to add products, then list them so that we can scroll through them. This app will be created using Kotlin and not Java. Kotlin is the current and future of Android, and Java is going away quickly. I wouldn't waste time trying to follow tutorials on Java. This is geared for those who want to become an Android Engineer (Developer). I've been a software engineer for nearly two decades and through it all I've learned that while programming can be hard, it can also be highly rewarding. The last app I built cost $30M and took a team of dozens of software engineers nearly a year to build. When I hit the button to launch the app in Google Play I felt a lot of pride in my job as an Android Engineer. Within weeks, the app was the #1 trending app in Google Play. Not bad! But I didn't start my career as an Android Engineer. My first job was a web developer at a camera equipment manufacturer. Managing ecommerce websites was fun, but I wanted to switch to Android. Learning through programs like YouTube, Treehouse, lynda.com, Stack Overflow and lots of Google searches and random blogs, I taught myself enough to get my first job as an Android Developer. It was fun, and it also taught me a lot about determination and hard work. In this series, I hope to guide other developers who want to make a switch. Maybe one day you'll be the one teaching me here on YouTube, you never know :) Hopefully this tutorial series will be engaging and interesting. If you have questions about Android Studio, please leave a comment and if I have time I will respond. Thanks! :) Connect with me on LinkedIn! 🤍

Do you want to build an Android app? Learn to use Android Studio to create a complete app using Kotlin and the latest technologies from Google in the tutorial series specifically made for 2021. In this video we download and install the required software for Android app development, create a new project, then create a new emulator or virtual device in which to run our new app. At the end of this we'll modify some XML code to update some text on our screen. Videos scheduled every week! Why is this series updated every year? My yearly Android developer's course is refreshed yearly to keep pace with changes in the creation of apps. Google constantly updates the OS, adds new libraries and recommends new practices. What makes this different? This course uses Kotlin, a programming language based on Java. Most apps in Google Play are either built entirely using Kotlin or are actively being converted to Kotlin. (I can't recommend using Java for apps.) Who are you? I'm Daniel Malone, an Android Engineer in downtown Austin, TX. My first start with computers was coding websites when I was twelve before transitioning to mobile engineering. Simple App Widget - Android Studio Tutorial

In this tutorial we will learn, how to create a simple home screen app widget that contains a button and opens the MainActivity when we click it. For this we will create a widget layout, an AppWidgetProvider class and an AppWidgetProviderInfo xml file. In the AppWidgetProvider java file we will then override onUpdate and create a PendingIntent which brings us to our MainActivity. We set this intent on our widget button with help of the RemoteViews class and then update our widget with the appWidgetManager object. We repeat this process for all instances of our widget by looping through the appWidgetIds int array. In the app widget info xml file, we define the update frequency with updatePeriodMillis, the widgetCategory, minHeight, minWidth, minResizeWidth, initialLayout and more. Lastly we register our AppWidgetProvider in the AndroidManifest.xml file as a broadcast receiver with the APPWIDGET_UPDATE intent filter. We register our appwidget info object in the meta data tag with android.appwidget.provider. Our widget will have a previewImage which we create with help of the Widget Preview app and it will be resizable. In the latest version of Android changes were made as to how exactly elements from our XML layout are used in Kotlin. View Binding is one approach to access, modify and interact with our layout, what the user sees. In this Android Studio tutorial let's setup a version of view binding. First we'll add a few lines to our build.gradle file, then setup a new variable at the top of MainActivity, allowing us to access XML widgets. Join this channel to get access to perks: 🤍

In this video series we will learn everything about notifications in Android. In part 1 we will start by creating notification channels (Categories) which are necessary since Android Oreo (API level 26) to be able to show any notifications. These channels should be created as soon as we start our app, so we will do it in the onCreate method of a class that extends Application. When we create these channels, we have to pass an ID, a name and an importance level. Additionally we can customize the channel further, like enabling the LED, activating vibration or changing the sound, but the user has ultimate control over the channel's behavior. When our NotificationChannel objects are created, we pass them to the NotificationManager's createNotificationChannel method. When we then want to show a notification, we create it with the NotificationCompat.Builder, where we can set a title, a message, an icon, a priority level, a category and many more customization options, and then we pass this Notification object to the NotificationManagerCompat's notify method, where we also have to pass an ID which we can later use to update or cancel this particular notification.
